A Saturday with No Football

We knew August 28th, the day the season started, that this day would come.

Alas it is on the horizon. A Saturday with no football!

No more tailgates. No ESPN College Gameday. No beautiful co-eds. No band playing our favorite song! It is all gone.

What to do? It has been over three months since we have been without. We are all at a bit of a loss here. How is a man to fill his Saturday without college football?

Let us help you out and offer a few suggestions.

First and most important, if you value your companionship with your significant other, do something with your wife, girlfriend, fiance! Who is that you ask? That is the cute little thing (way to cute for you we might add) that has been patiently waiting to get you back on Saturdays.

She has listened to you yell at the TV. Put up with your drunkenness at all the tailgates. Limited her comments when she caught you drooling over a young co-ed and even fixed you dinner a time or two.

TAKE HER OUT!

Now if you don't have a "significant other" and you:

a. Don't have finals to study for.
b. Live in an area of the country where it is too cold to do anything outside.
c. Believe the only joy that comes from the holiday season is shopping on Christmas Eve.
d. Have already defended your favorite program's NCAA '09 National Title 10 times.
e. Live in a spotlessly clean home.

and

f. Are hopelessly addicted to your 47" flat screen HDTV.

Here is some TV programing that might cure your withdrawal symptoms. Please check your local listings for times in your area.

Are you an ACC fan? Now is your chance to scout next year's schedule. This weekend is the semi finals for the FCS championship. Richmond plays at Northern Iowa, 4pm EST on ESPN. Just in case you are lost Friday night, Montana plays at JMU, 8pm EST on the "Deuce."

Big 12 fans - Storm Chasers; Sean and Reed bring their teams closer to tornadoes than ever before, 2pm CST on Discovery and we must never forget King of the Hill, 3pm CST on FX.

For SEC fans, CMT has you covered with the 12 Days of Redneck Christmas, 5pm EST.

CMT is also helping West Virginia fans with Larry the Cable Guy's Star-Studded Christmas Extravaganza at 9:30pm EST. It is rumored that Mountaineer head coach Bill Stewart is co-hosting.

Bill Dance Outdoors on Versus at 1pm EST gives us a nice review of the 2008 Tennessee football season. In case you don't get a chance to catch it, we have posted it below.

Kind of reminds you of Ol' Fulmer, don't it?

Layla Kiffin says goodbye on Bravo's 7pm PST airing of Real Housewives of Orange County.

Auburn boosters call in to CNBC's 8pm EST showing of the Suze Orman Show to ask if paying $5.1 million to buy out one of the most successful coaches in the SEC is a sound financial decision. Suze's reaction is priceless.

Cal fans will find An Inconvenient Truth airing on Discovery at 1pm PST.

For those Notre Dame, Washington, WAZZU, Syracuse, Iowa State, Michigan, SMU, and North Texas fans, Trainwrecks is on Spike at noon EST. If you need something in prime time Mission Impossible III is on TNT at 11pm EST.

For Oregon, Cal, Missouri, Army, Central Michigan and every other programs that donned ugly uni's this year, What Not To Wear is on TLC at 4, 5, and 6pm EST.

Bottom line: Whatever you do, don't forget the Heisman Trophy Presentation is at 8pm EST on (where do you think?) ESPN.

Don't worry. This weekend is just a practice for January as Bowl Season begins bright and early at 11am EST, Saturday, December 20th!

Week Fifteen Podcast for TCFGs

Bedlam. - "A place, scene, or state of uproar and confusion."

Oklahoma State may not have brought true bedlam to college football, but the Cowboys sure helped contribute to the opening of Pandora's box on the BCS.

This week's podcast by the College Football Guys answers the question everyone has been talking about: Did the BCS get it right between Texas and OU?

Plus: What is up with the SEC this year? Preview of the SEC, Big 12, ACC, Conference USA, and MAC Championships. TCFGs Heisman favorites. Notre Dame in crisis. How are OU and Ohio State the same?

All that and more on this controversial edition of the College Football Guys. Just click here. Press play and ENJOY!

What We Learned Week Twelve

While it was a relatively quiet weekend of college football, we here at The College Football Guys still learned some things about the sport. Now we would like to pass that knowledge on to you!

We now know that one of Phil Knight's cars must be a classy '78 Firebird. That is the only explanation we will accept for these Duck uniforms. Oregon you make this blog too easy for us.

Michigan fans, Relax! Just because you have lost 8 games for the first time in program history doesn't mean it's the end of the world. Lots of football power houses have lost eight games in a season. Washington, Texas A&M, Notre Dame, SMU, have and look how far they have come from the depths of defeat...

Colorado fans thought they were at a WWE match this weekend, as someone thought it would be cool to bring a laser pointer to the game and actually use it. I think Buff fans thought they were playing Tech this weekend.

Every weekend Notre Dame wins, they are "turning the corner" in the minds of the pundits and fans. Every weekend the Irish lose, it is "the end of the world! Charlie should be fired!" Make up your minds people!

Though not as thrilling as last year, the USC/Stanford game still came with a quirky ending. Down 45-17, Jim Harbaugh decided to use the last play of the game to kick a field goal. Seeing this USC coach, Pete Carrol called a time out to "ice the kicker." After the break Harbaugh trotted the offense back on to the field and Cardinal QB Alex Loukas threw an 18 yard touchdown pass to make the final score 45-23. The spread for the game just happened to be 23 points. Do you think someone might have reminded Jim that there are plenty of Stanford boosters and alumni that had Stanford to cover?

College TV announcers still don't know the difference between college and NFL replay rules! NCAA coaches have no red "hankies" to throw at officials. All reviews come from the replay booth, regardless if it is the last or the first two minutes of the game. Announcers, if you need to study up, here is a guide that might help.

If you look in the dictionary under jerk most SEC fans will tell you that Steve Spurrier's face is the only entry the book needs. It must be extremely gratifying for those same fans to watch Spurrier, the inventor of "style points," receive the largest beat down of his career this weekend. The defeat came at the hands of none other than his alma mater and the program responsible for his reputation. Look on the bright side Steve, plenty of golf courses have great winter rates right now!

If you paid any attention to college football this weekend you learned of a great story of Florida State's Myron Rolle and his attempt to win a Rhodes Scholarship. FSU and the NCAA have worked out a way for Rolle to attend the interview and play against Maryland on Nov. 22nd. Congrats to both for figuring this out, now it's time to come up with your best interview questions to ask Rolle.

Here is ours: "It has been said that a man's reputation is formed by the company he keeps. Explain to the committee how a brilliant man like yourself justifies playing on a team that has widespread academic fraud and teammates that recently thought it was acceptable to beat up students in the school cafeteria?"

Myron Rolle reminds us of this old Sesame Street skit:

Oregon wasn't the only ones that had some ugly black uniforms this weekend. FSU had their own ugly black uni's as well. BTW, Florida State, blackouts are only cool if black is one of your official school colors and Oregon next time you try a blackout let your fans know that they need to wear black as well.

What We Learned Week Eleven

We here at the College Football Guys learned many things this weekend in college football. Chief among them was the odds of seeing ANOTHER Big Ten team in the BCS Championship game dropped to almost zero! The nation, including FOX executives, BCS Sponsors/Advertisers, and anyone who enjoys watching a competitive football game, rejoiced!!

This week we learned that Joe Pa can't figure out the BCS. We think he solved the puzzle on Saturday. It's real simple Joe, JUST WIN!

After John Parker Wilson scored Alabama's first touchdown Saturday, in "Death Valley," against LSU. He earned a "celebration penalty" for making the "Call me" motion with his hand. It appears that LSU idiots, er fans, once again found the cell phone number of an opposing SEC player, posted it on the Internet, and called repeatedly. That made us wonder what Tiger fans had to say to JPW, that was so important. The following are the ten most creative messages left by genius Tiger fans.

10. "Is Mike Hunt there?"
9. "Parker, Is your refrigerator running? Better go catch it."
8. "John Parker Wilson? More like Sara Jessica Parker."
7. "This is Nicolas Sarkozy, and I love that Sara Palin!"
6. "Do you have Fat Albert in a can?"
5. "You wouldn't happen to have a spare roll of toilet paper would you?"
4. "Hi. This is Jeni. You remember me from this weekend right? You don't?! (sniffle) Well I went to the doctor today (sob) and he ran a bunch of tests and said I am (bawl) pregnant, and it's (weep) yours."
3. (Deep breaths) "Luke I am your father! Luke!"
2. "Why do you keep calling me! You called me! What do you want!"
1. (After one bottle of bourbon) "John Parker Wilson, you ain't nuttin' but a bunch of Tiga' Bait! We goin' beat that Tide A** on Sata'day!"

Speaking of smart people from Louisiana, did anyone else find it interesting that Brett Helms (Center for LSU), was CBS' Scholar of the Game with a whopping 3.0 GPA? Seriously? There was no other player on either the Alabama or LSU sidelines with a higher GPA?

We still haven't learned why the SEC hates USC so much. This year the Trojans show all the classic signs of an SEC team - great defense. Minus the "Fluke in Corvallis," USC has allowed opposing offenses to score ONLY 33 points! The Trojan defense ranks 1st in the nation in Passing Defense, Total Defense and Scoring Defense, allowing less than a touchdown a game (6.67)! If that doesn't scream SEC football, we will never know what does.

We learned last week that beating Michigan, in "The Big House," was no longer enough to keep Toledo Tom's job. Now we wonder if beating Tennessee, in Neyland Stadium, is going to be enough to save Wyoming Coach Joe Glenn's job? Maybe his Cowboys' performance is just expected these days in Laramie, as Coach Glenn is 3-1 verse the mighty SEC in his tenure at Wyoming.

Will someone please inform Mountaineer fans that the game of football is 60 minutes long! With Cincinnati leading 20-7 and less than 4 minutes remaining in the game, WVU turned the ball over on downs inside the Cincinnati 10 yard line. Mountaineer fans hit the exits. They didn't get far. When the Mountaineers scored 13 points in the final 1:11 of the game fans began pouring back into the stands for overtime. Remember WVU fans, "It ain't over until, the fat lady sings!"

Whoever still believes that recruiting magazines and web sites don't embellish Notre Dame's prospects and national rankings to sell subscriptions to rabid Irish fans hasn't watched a game of college football lately.

We think Wake Forest's gold uni's should have stayed back in 1956, but we will let you decide.

Revenge of the Readers!

Halloween is here and in the spirit of Trick or Treat we have let the readers take over the blog! Yeah you read right, we have placed the fate of our blog into your hands for a day. SCARY!!!

"Call the fire department, this one's outta control!"

A UT fan sent us this list of his top concerns fellow Longhorn fans should have this weekend in Lubbock. He seems fairly confident with an impending victory. We'll soon see if he should have legitimate concern...

Ten Reason's Texas Tech Will Beat The Longhorns

Looks like someone is ready for Halloween!

10. If that kicker (Matt Williams) can hit a 30 yard field goal for free rent with no pass rush I am sure he can make a game winner.

9. Colt McCoy and the Texas offense will get shut down against that juggernaut Red Raider D.

8. Texas will be overwhelmed by the size of that crowd in Lubbock having not played in a stadium of that magnitude since high school.

7. UT should always fear the flying tortillas.

6. If Tech can beat an unranked Nebraska team in overtime and win big against a 23 ranked Kansas surely they can manhandle the #1 team in the nation.

5. All that winning experience of Big 12 titles Tech has could be the difference maker in a close game.

4. Gram Harrell after all he is the QB that UT and Oklahoma both passed on.

3. Colt McCoy gets knocked out of a game not by a crushing blow from the Defensive End, but from a D size battery thrown from the whiskey bent fan sitting 4 rows up in the student section.

2. Every program in the nation would rather have a Mike Leach instead of a Mac Brown!

1. Longhorns won’t be able to recover from the cloud of marijuana smoke surrounding the stadium.

If you want deliverance scary, an LSU fan revealed to us this Alabama fan. Boy does he make Arkansas fans look normal. Someone should definitely give this guy a show!

Your right, your right, Jerry Springer did in the nineties.

What We Learned Week Nine

We learned a great deal about college football this weekend so without further ado here are our findings.

This week Tim Tebow gave his full endorsement of Colt McCoy for the Heisman trophy. Which raises the obvious question, "If Superman wears Tim Tebow Pajama's to bed, does Tim Tebow wears Colt McCoy PJ's to bed?" Next task: finding Colt a cape.

Seems No. 1 Texas vs. No. 6 Oklahoma State was only good enough for regional coverage. Nice work ABC/ESPN. The whole west coast enjoyed the thrilling UCLA/Cal game. Can't get enough of that Rick Neuheisel...

For those who were lucky enough to get the top ten match up, you missed the first quarter trying to adjust your TV screen. Even with the new HD TV's it is still hard to translate THAT much orange!

While Georgia piled 52 on LSU, the Bayou Bengals realized how much they REALLY missed their 12th man this weekend.

Vanderbilt's Cinderella season officially came to an end with a 10-7 loss to Duke. The loss combined with Auburn's embarrassing effort at WVU, on Thursday night, gives the SEC a 5-6 record against non-conference BCS schools with 4 match ups remaining. In case you were wondering, the Mountain West is 8-5 vs. non-conference BCS programs.

Went to watch the Ohio State/Penn State game this weekend and a SEC game broke out.

ESPN's College Gameday once again brought us crazy Buckeye fans. Apparently Ohio State's new mantra is "If you can't beat 'em, Boo 'em," as a chorus of boos filled the air every time LSU, Florida, or USC were mentioned on the program. We here at The College Football Guys did a little research and discovered three embarrassing losses by the Buckeyes to these particular programs in the last three years. We were given this advise once and thought we would pass it on to Buckeye fans, "It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak out and remove all doubt." Just food for thought.

Scholarships for college kickers are overrated. Matt Williams was a normal college kid when he started school this year, but that was before the Red Raiders played the mighty Minutemen of U Mass. During halftime of that game Matt hit a 30 yard field goal for a year of free rent. Mike Leach was in need of a kicker and thought to himself, "I wonder if this kid likes pirates?" Four weeks later Matt connected on 9 of 9 extra point attempts against Kansas. We will soon see if the kid can do it in a clutch.

June Jones brought the "Run and Shoot" to SMU. Unfortunately for the Mustangs all Navy needed was the run. Navy ran the ball 77 times for 404 yards without even attempting a pass for a 34-7 victory! The Midshipman's quarterback carried the ball 41 times for 224 yards and four touchdowns. We are still trying to calculate his QB rating. Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson is soo jealous.

If you think the BCS is confusing try figuring out the ACC. Maybe instead of a championship game that they can't sell out, the ACC should implement an 8 team playoff. Maybe it will be the model for a real playoff.

Just when we thought Oregon had exhausted their ability to look ugly they found this combination from their 384 possible uniform choices. And you thought your girlfriend had a lot of clothes.

What We Learned Week Five

"I don't believe what I just saw!"

This weekend still got you rubbing your eyes? Maybe pinching yourself to see if this is all just a dream? Have you been left a confused mess on the couch crying out, "Why! Why!" Well to be frank we are still scratching our collective brains as well. However we did learn a couple of things this weekend.

Note to SEC fans. Writing off the Florida loss to an Ol' Miss team that hadn't won an SEC game on the road in the last 14 tries to "depth of conference" sounds as ridiculous as the following:
  • Oregon State's victory over USC definitely shows how strong the Pac Ten is.
  • Even though Maryland lost to Middle Tennessee State their victory over ACC power house Clemson demonstrates the depth and power of the ACC from top to bottom.
  • Michigan's 19 point comeback to upset #9 Wisconsin shows how much resolve and power the Big Ten conference has.
  • Houston's victory over BCS Cinderella ECU shows that top to bottom, it doesn't matter who you play in Conference USA, you better be careful!

Upsets in conference play happen SEC fans! Get over yourselves.

Maybe Forbes Magazine knew what they were talking about when they named Nick Saban "The Most Powerful Coach in Sports."

The practice of wearing black should be reserved ONLY for funerals. Here is the now famous You Tube footage. Advance to 1:05 so you don't waste your entire morning.

While it seems UGA was confused on the purpose of wearing black, Oregon State had an "orange out," Penn State had a "white out" and Miami called Stanford to find out some more information about their "Satisfaction Guarantee." With an attendance on only 35,830 in Dolphin Stadium it appeared they were doing a "walk out." Maybe Hurricane fans were just protesting Butch Davis' return.

Penn State offense looks much better in HD. It is amazing what the Lion's can do when Anthony Morelli isn't on the field to throw interceptions every other possession.

Iowa is still paying Kirk Ferentz too much to lose at home to Northwestern.

Congratulations Duke! You finally made someone else the red-headed step-child of the ACC!

Even though visiting Pac Ten teams have to take a flight several hours long to Spokane, jump on a bus down a dirt road to Pullman, WA to stay the night at a Best Western in Moscow, ID, it doesn't seem to stop them from hanging 60+ on WAZZU, even on homecoming weekend.

While the spirit of David was alive and well in most college stadiums throughout the land, it seems the Palouse of Eastern Washington just might be a bit too remote for the littl' fella.

Southern Snore

As witnessed in Auburn's stimulating 3-2 victory over Mississippi State, the thrilling SEC conference schedule is upon us whether we like it or not. A schedule chalked full of match ups so short on offense it makes even the most die hard fan reach for the remote to find Premier League or Australian Rules Football on the telly.

It's times like these I wish they would invent a TV alarm for the sports viewer.

Wouldn't it be great if an alarm sounded on your TV during those late, ESPN prime time, SEC games? One loud enough to awaken you from your slumber and let you know an SEC offensive juggernaut just broke into the red zone and is looking to score.

Maybe the red zone is a bit premature. We all know the AMAZING defenses of the SEC might just stall the drive into a missed/botched field goal attempt. What if the alarm sounded one play before a score? This way we wouldn't miss a thing and not feel guilty dozing off during the game.

If they can place a yellow line at the first down marker, record "live" television and institute instant replay in "America's pastime" then we definitely have the technology and the capability to make this happen!

I know! I know! I hear all of ya'll in the south, yelling at your collective computers. Trumpeting what you have been brain washed to believe. That 12-6 is truly a GREAT defensive battle! For you there may be no hope. But I would wager to guess that when you were watching the Auburn/MSU game, you wished there was a better way.

Here is hoping this weekend's LSU/Auburn game is not a waste of a good night's rest and more exciting than the last two played in Auburn's Jordan-Hare Stadium. Those results were hair raising 10 to 9 and 7 to 3 matches won by Auburn.

In a world without a TV sports alarm, hope is all we have.

More Fun with Auburn/MSU

Every Day Should Be Saturday brings us this great montage of the high...we mean low-lights of last Saturday's "contest" in Starkville, MS.

It is definitely good to see that ESPN is getting every penny of entertainment value out of their $2.25 billion, 15 year deal with the SEC. Walt Disney, must be rolling in his grave. I can hear him now, "You call this crap good, clean, family fun?! You idiots! My final words were 'Let's finish Disney World,' not 'Purchase The World-Wide Leader!'"

"Got any Dixie in Ya?"

"Want some?"

That pick up line will get you ALL the ladies!

This is a post we did WAY back in March, but with today being the official start to college football, it is important to know where you stand on this issue before you even turn the tube on for the first game...

When it comes to the world of college football we all know that there is a huge divide between the North and South. It's as if "The War Between The States" never ended. Knowing this, it is important to discover where you stand on the Mason-Dixon Line. With this in mind we offer a simple test. I know it maybe old and you may have seen it before, but take it again! Who knows how much back-to-back SEC National Champs has affected your brain?

BTW - If you still think the Big Ten/Eleven is better than the SEC skip to the next blog entry, we already know your a funny wawlkin' and tawlkin' yank'.

Oh - There is no test for our "sick" friends from "So Cal, Bra!" Just take this one and see what happens.

Burning Desire

It appears that Gold Bond's relationship with USC football is on the mend. After years of being the official "junk reliever" of the Cardinal and Gold, a relationship so tight that Gold Bond even marketed themselves with USC colors, Gold Bond and USC have kissed and made up.

The Trojans today admitted to acting like a big jerk and are in desperate need of Gold Bond's healing touch after an outbreak of "jock itch" hit camp. As many as 25% of USC players have been afflicted with the "epidemic."

Do you hate the University of Spoiled Children? The House Rock Built brings all of you a better acronym to wear on your chest. Enjoy!

BTW - we here at The College Football Guys.com expect a finders fee when you purchase this shirt.

Phil's Proposal

Well we all know by now that University of Tennessee coach Phil Fulmer was subpoenaed at SEC Media Days last week. Lawyers for former Alabama booster Wendell Smith are suing the NCAA and want Fulmer to sit down for a deposition on Sept. 25, as they believe he was a secret witness in an investigation of Alabama.

Well SEC, it won't be too long before your circus includes this fine little thing...

Now we're talking!
