What We Learned Week Fourteen

While the College Football Guys may not have figured out if the BCS got the Big 12 South tie breaker right (find out what we think in this week's podcast tonight!). We still learned an awful lot this weekend in college football. Below is just a sample.

It is no wonder the Big 12 conference is getting so much love this year. Watching the end of a Big 12 game is like watching the end of a March Madness game. Both Kansas/Missouri and Nebraska/Colorado games were decided in the final minute. Kansas with a play from Todd Reesing that would make Flutie proud and Nebraska with a 57 yard field goal! One can only hope the Dr. Pepper Big 12 Championship Game brings as much excitement.



How fast has the luster faded from the MIGHTY SEC? With a victory over rival FSU, Florida avoided an Almost College football Conference weekend sweep of the SEC. South Carolina, Georgia and the former darlings of Vanderbilt each lost their regular season finales. Their defeats brought the SEC's record to 6-10 vs. BCS programs this year and 4-6 vs. the ACC. Before Florida's victory on Saturday night the last BCS program the SEC defeated was at Arizona State on September 20th! Since that game the SEC has lost to Texas, Wake (twice), West Virginia, Duke, Georgia Tech, Clemson as well as non-BCS "powerhouse" Wyoming.

Notre Dame found out Saturday night who the true five star athletes are. USC's dominance of the Irish was not defined enough in the 38-3 score. The true stat is the 91 yards of total offense the Trojans held ND to. The Irish could muster only 9 yards in the first half and achieved their first, first down on the last play of the third quarter. NO ONE can argue that recruiting web sites and magazines have been inflating Notre Dame classes for years in an attempt to sell subscriptions and memberships. There isn't a single player on ND's roster that would start for USC.

The "Mad Hatter," Les Miles at LSU, was out "Hatted" this weekend by Arkansas. Razorback QB Casey Dicks threw a 24 yard TD pass with 22 seconds remaining to win the game for the Hogs. It is safe to say that the luck, er "great calls," of 2007 just weren't there for the Tigers in 2008.

Who says that Houston Nutt is the only "Right Reverend" in the SEC? Georgia coach Mark Richt sure looked like he was doing plenty of preaching on Saturday when he made his teamtake a knee and gather 'round after the third quarter. We all know the only reason teams go into the locker room at halftime is so the band can use the field.

Rick Neuheisel will start winning at UCLA when he finds a QB that throws more touchdowns to players in powder blue and gold than the opposition. Arizona State returned three Kevin Craft interceptions for touchdowns on Friday night (Craft's 17th, 18th, and 19th INT for the year to 7 TD's). Add the 71 yard fumble return for a touchdown you have an NCAA record for four defensive scores in one game. Remove the mistakes? UCLA wins 9-6.

Several uniform issues that came up this weekend. Since when did it become popular for kickers to color coordinate their shoes with their uniforms? Just goes to show that flipping through Eastbay catalogs takes up a majority of a kicker's practice/film study time. We wonder if these kickers ever get jealous of their girlfriends' shoe collection.




Seems that University of Missouri/Columbia researcher, David Brunsma findings were true in "that student uniforms have no direct effect on substance use, behavioral problems, or attendance." While he was talking about uniforms in the classroom of K-12 students he could have easily done his research on the results of college football programs wearing alternative uniforms. Especially ones that are piss yellow.

Why Should You Care If Cowboys Win?

Bedlam.

How can one word have so much meaning?

To the college football fan, bedlam is a rivalry game played between two schools from the plains of Oklahoma.

However, according to Webster's Dictionary bedlam is "a place, scene, or state of uproar and confusion."

Saturday night in Stillwater, OK the Cowboys of Oklahoma State have the chance to truly release bedlam on college football and unleash a storm on the BCS.

How is this possible you ask? If OSU is victorious Texas Tech will represent the Big 12 South in the conference championship game next weekend in Kansas City. That's right folks, Texas Tech would finish the season 11-1, the same record as Texas. Thanks to a last second touchdown by Michael Crabtree a couple weeks ago the Red Raiders have a tie breaker advantage.

With a victory Saturday night, OSU leaves title contenders Texas and Oklahoma sitting on the sidelines, unable to play for their own conference title, and essentially locked out of the BCS Championship Game.

Who then is your national title match up? Until now it has been assumed that the BCS Championship game would come down to the champions of the SEC and Big 12, this year's best conferences. But, lets assume Texas Tech defeats Missouri in the Big 12 Championship, would the BCS really accept a team that lost by 43 just last week? We think not.

Bedlam.

What match up then, in this new "Big 12 champion free world," makes the BCS Championship Game legit?

Assuming Alabama and Florida make it into the SEC Championship without incurring any other loses this weekend, the BCS will place them as one participant, but who shall they play?

If Oregon State defeats Oregon, USC experiences the same fate as Oklahoma and Texas, no conference championship.

This leaves us with just one option, Penn State. Another one loss Big Ten team sitting in the clubhouse watching and waiting for someone to pull a "Greg Norman" as the leaders finish.

Deja Vu all over again! A slow, Big Ten team that most will say an undefeated Utah and Boise State stand a better chance against the SEC foe. How much more of this can we take as college football fans?

The choice is yours this weekend. If you are a fan of a college football playoff, then you need to see the Cowboys set bedlam loose this weekend by defeating Oklahoma. If you love your BCS then a Sooner victory allows for the perpetuation of the system with minimal damage.

Will "uproar and confusion" prevail late Saturday night in Stillwater, or will the BCS bring "clarity" to the outcome of college football?

What We Learned Week Ten

What another crazy weekend in college football! Just when you think you have everything figured out Michael Crabtree went and turned the college football world upside down with the most electrifying plays of the year.

While America is having a hard time figuring out who is the best team in college football after Crab's last second stunt, there are some things we learned this weekend in college football.

It seems that USC bores easily when preparing for a 46 point conference underdog. But never fear, Captain Compete was there to save the day and help the Cardinal and Gold maintain their focus. Gamblers rejoice! Trojans cover!



We didn't believe it at first. It was too crazy to be true! Is that really sections of bleachers coming down from the student section? Yahoo confirms what our eyes did see! The student section in Lubbock passing their bleachers forward during the fourth quarter of Texas Tech/Texas game. Bobby Knight must be soo proud! Who needs tortillas when bleachers work just fine, thank you very much!

Overtime of the Pitt/Notre Dame game brought an unwelcome event. Sprinklers that were timed to go off at the end of regulation began to soak the field at Notre Dame Stadium. Assistant Groundskeeper Daniel Ruettiger would NEVER have let this happen! What is going on at Notre Dame these days?



What is going on at Michigan these days? After losing on a hook and lateral play to Purdue on Saturday, the Wolverines are guaranteed their first losing season since 1967. Stop making winter travel plans Michigan fans, the Wolverines will miss a bowl game for the first time in 33 years!

A win against Michigan, in the Big House, isn't even enough to keep a coach's job these days. Toledo coach Tom Amstutz is stepping down after a 2-6 start to the '08 season. A season that includes leading the Rockets to the first MAC victory ever, over the once storied Michigan program.

"The Eyes of Texas" are indeed upon us! The Mean Green of North Texas find a way to squeak out their first victory of the season against Big Red and the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers. However, more proof might be needed as Missouri sneaks out of Waco with a 'W'.

At 6'7", 350 lbs, Texas Tech's offensive lineman Brandon Carter, aka Mankind, scares us as much as Lattimer did in "The Program."

At least the USC Song Girls still look good at 40!

Just when we thought Oregon had the ugliest uniforms in college football, Cal had to go and do them one better.

What We Learned Week Eight

Another week, another dominating performance from Texas.

Another week of hearing "The Eyes of Texas." That thrilling song set to the tune of "I've been working on the railroad" and whose lyrics are a play on words from a saying Robert E. Lee had "The eyes of the south are upon you." Therefore it is in honor of this lack of originality that we bring you this equally creative blog entry.

Who says Texas A&M is the only program with a 12th man? LSU just strategically places them on the field in spiffy pin striped suits.



Texas Tech coach Mike Leach didn't feel 36 points against A&M was enough to impress voters this week, so he had QB Graham Harrell sneak it in with 20 seconds left. This is about as classy as Red Raider fans. Think we are being a little hard? Then you haven't seen this video yet.



Virginia Tech might want to rethink its future travel plans to Boston College. Since joining the ACC the Hokies have won EVERY conference road game, EXCEPT the two against the Eagles in Boston.

Rece Davis, we get it! Pittsburgh's LeSean "Shady" McCoy is the real Slim Shady and all other Slim Shady's are just imitating. McCoy has stood up this season and carried the Panthers to a top 20 BCS ranking even after being embarrassed by Bowling Green week one.

According to one strategically placed sign, that was up for about 10 seconds on ESPN College Gameday before black clothed security swooped in and confiscated it - Chase Daniel has a FUPA. Who knew?

Tulsa's football team created a bit of Midnight Madness themselves hanging 77 on UTEP Saturday night. Practice should be interesting this week in El Paso with Mike Price carrying around that crazy pick axe of his. If we played on the Miner's D we would be a little scared...

At least Mike Price has one thing to be thankful for, he is no longer coaching at Washington State! The Cougars could possibly be the worst team in the HISTORY of NCAA Division 1-A football. Of the Cougars four Pac Ten games they have played this year, their opponents have scored no less than 63 points. Three of those loses have come at home. Never has this feat been accomplished in NCAA history. Two weeks ago the program held open tryouts for a quarterback! The student body might want to concider changing their mascot to the Pinatas.

Rubbing Howard's Rock and "the most exciting 25 seconds in college football" is no longer enough for Clemson's new coach Dabo Swinney. He added the "Tiger Walk" with players in suits and ties walking to the locker room and "All In", a team walk from the 50 yard line in. Even with these recently minted traditions the Tigers couldn't get out of their way against the "Ramblin' Wreck" of GT. It is going to take more than just new traditions to convince some die hard fans the move was right.

Dr. Lou is wishing he acted a little differently last week when he talked about Colt McCoy's chances of winning the Heisman. Think he has changed his mind after Saturday night's 29-32, 337 yds, 2 passing/2 rushing touchdown performance?

What We Will Learn This Weekend

I know that we missed our weekly lesson on college football this Monday so we are going to make it up to you and provide a preview of this week's action. In honor of Ball State's 6-0 record and first stop into the AP top 25, we will give you our top 10 list of things that you will learn and see this weekend in college football.

10. Clemson will further muddy the ACC water's tonight by continuing the Thursday night upset theme and defeating Wake Forest on a last second field goal.

9. Who would have thought that this weekend's Arizona and Stanford game would be a match up of the ONLY remaining Pac Ten schools that still have healthy starting QB? Oregon has used four after losing their starter before the season even began. As of today it appears that ASU's Rudy Carpenter will miss his first start in 37 games.

8. Coach Tuberville picked a convenient week to fire his offensive coordinator. Arkansas has been outscored 139 to 31 in the last three games. By taking over the offensive play calling before this weekend's home game against the Razorbacks, Tommy will look like a play calling genius!

7. The scoring will be so fast and furious at the Missouri/Oklahoma State game that there will be no need to waste time lowering the nets behind the goal posts. Next week the NCAA will collect an extra sponsor check from Allstate for the additional advertising.

6. Oklahoma will trail for the first time this year.

5. This will be one more week that Big Ten referees don't have to worry about Joe Paterno running them down to give them an earful. At least the bathrooms are closer in the press box.



4. The only malfunction this weekend in UNC's Kenan Stadium will be the Jimmy Clausen and the Notre Dame offense. No more lighting fires in the PA system, light delays, falling concrete, broken elevators, or parachutists descending on the wrong stadium.

3. Tim Tebow has been praying this week for the safety of LSU defensive end Ricky Jean-Francois.

2. In a game that will ultimately cost Ty Willingham his job, Washington will struggle with their match up against BYE.

And the number one thing we will learn this weekend...

Warning! Trap Ahead!

It is that time of year again! The time when one's favorite college football team should be overly careful avoiding a well laid trap.

What kind of trap you ask? The kind that jumps right out and kills you while you are looking ahead to next week's "bigger and better" opponent. You know like how the Emperor lured Luke's friends into a carefully thought out trap in Return of the Jedi.

Ever wonder how that sequence would have turned out if it was in other movies...?



As we saw last week when 19, 20, and 21 year olds are told they are the greatest thing since sliced bread they tend to believe it. Once they believe it the trap is half set, all that is missing is a road game verse an "inferior" opponent and a game the kids can't wait to play around the corner.

With these thoughts in mind here are some possible trap games to look for this weekend.

Penn State @ Purdue - First off we need to know if Joe Pa has even seen the Star Wars series. We believe that 1977 (the year Episode III came out) was the same year Paterno purchased the glasses he wears today. Anyway lets get to the game! After beating up on their first quality opponent of the year, Illinois, on national television, the spot light is back on in State College. This weekend they travel to a Big Ten team with a great quarterback and wounded pride from a loss to Notre Dame. With a match up at Wisconsin looming for the Lions they should be careful they don't overlook the Boilermakers early Saturday.

Texas @ Colorado - This is the first trip outside of the state of Texas for the Longhorns this year. Colt McCoy and the UT offense have been unstoppable so far this season. However with the Red River Shootout next weekend in Dallas, don't be surprised if the Buffs give Texas fits. Let us not forget what happened last year when Oklahoma visited Boulder the weekend before Red River.



Missouri @ Nebraska - Missouri is probably not looking ahead to Okie State next weekend, but don't be too surprised if they aren't thinking about playing in Austin on the 18th. Chase Daniel will find it hard to focus the next two weeks as he finally gets the chance to go home to Texas and show everyone what they have missed. Not only is this Missouri's first conference game, it is also their first true road game. The Tigers have lost 15 straight in Lincoln and need to make sure that streak stops this weekend, or else it is bye, bye title hopes!

Our Favorite Women and The Big 12

From the land that prides itself with friendly, hard working people, come the most attractive women you have ever seen. Therefore it makes all the sense in the world to compare Big 12 programs with the women we have grown to love over the years. Enjoy!

Baylor - Tina Fey. Conservative dress and nature. Can sneak up on you when you least expect it.

Colorado - Kathy Ireland. Had a couple huge years and was every one's Cinderella now is better known for selling furniture and intramural programs.

Iowa State - Jessica Simpson. Popular when matched with the right guy. Thinks a Cardinal is the same as a Cyclone. Another free trivia question: "What does I.O.W.A. stand for?"

Nebraska - Cindy Crawford. At one time the "super" standard by which others followed, however with time became old and outdated as others "passed" on by. Distinctive features that cannot be removed - a mole and Tom Osbourne. Maybe their school became a Coke campus...



Missouri - Victoria Beckham. Produced some nice hits in the past with a couple great teams. Overhauled to look younger. Now that they are married to a hot guy, they have become every one's sexy pick. "So Major!"

Kansas - Paris Hilton. Nobody is quite sure how they got where they are. Convinced they will crash very soon. One you enjoyed the tape, the other you hope you NEVER see...Mangino do NOT spend a night in Paris.

Kansas State - Demi Moore. Behind the scenes and solid for many years. Couple nice blockbusters. Ex husband is still in the mix. Trying to revive career with younger man.

Oklahoma - Pamela Anderson. Big, brash and performance enhanced under Switzer. Spent time with lesser suitors. Got back up with a surprising year, but still can't break back through with a big time win. Embarrassing "incidents" cost them money and respect.

Oklahoma State - Anna Nichole Smith. Married to famous oil billionaire. Famous outbursts, one in reality and one on reality TV. One hopes their future plays out a little differently.

Texas - Jenny McCarthy. America's favorite girl. Well dressed. Larger than life. Many consider them annoying. Made it big when "matched" with the right show/QB. Steady performer. Enjoys yearly shootout with similar looking rival.



Texas Tech - Carmen Electra. Aspires to be Jenny McCarthy and Pamela Anderson. An electric offense capable of exploding at any moment. Has a crazy love of funny looking men - Prince, Dennis Rodman, pirates, and Yosemite Sam.

Texas A&M - Jennifer Aniston. Once one of our Friends now appears desperate for any one's love - John Mayer anyone...

BONUS: Texas A&M - Anna Kournikova. Favorite of all the guys. Focus placed on the pageantry and show over the actual play on the field. At least the Aggies have ONE title.

New Form of Off-Season Training

Here is something from a blog that has way more time on their hands to research then I do. I know that may seem hard to believe! In today's world of college football, everyone is looking for that edge. Seems some schools have found a way to get ahead without breaking NCAA rules. EDSBS.com keeps tabs on the arrests of all the NCAA schools football teams. There is lots of press lately about Tennessee, Alabama, and FSU, however lets hear it for Missouri, Illinois and Oregon State. They are really learning how to run with the big dawgs! No wonder their programs have improved so much!



At least they have weight rooms in prison!

Spring Ball is almost here for most of us! Texas had to get the jump, starting on the 22nd of Feb. But, we all know "everything is better in Texas!"
