To the college football fan, bedlam is a rivalry game played between two schools from the plains of Oklahoma.
However, according to Webster's Dictionary bedlam is "a place, scene, or state of uproar and confusion."
Saturday night in Stillwater, OK the Cowboys of Oklahoma State have the chance to truly release bedlam on college football and unleash a storm on the BCS.
How is this possible you ask? If OSU is victorious Texas Tech will represent the Big 12 South in the conference championship game next weekend in Kansas City. That's right folks, Texas Tech would finish the season 11-1, the same record as Texas. Thanks to a last second touchdown by Michael Crabtree a couple weeks ago the Red Raiders have a tie breaker advantage.
With a victory Saturday night, OSU leaves title contenders Texas and Oklahoma sitting on the sidelines, unable to play for their own conference title, and essentially locked out of the BCS Championship Game.
Who then is your national title match up? Until now it has been assumed that the BCS Championship game would come down to the champions of the SEC and Big 12, this year's best conferences. But, lets assume Texas Tech defeats Missouri in the Big 12 Championship, would the BCS really accept a team that lost by 43 just last week? We think not.
Bedlam.
What match up then, in this new "Big 12 champion free world," makes the BCS Championship Game legit?
Assuming Alabama and Florida make it into the SEC Championship without incurring any other loses this weekend, the BCS will place them as one participant, but who shall they play?
If Oregon State defeats Oregon, USC experiences the same fate as Oklahoma and Texas, no conference championship.
This leaves us with just one option, Penn State. Another one loss Big Ten team sitting in the clubhouse watching and waiting for someone to pull a "Greg Norman" as the leaders finish.
Deja Vu all over again! A slow, Big Ten team that most will say an undefeated Utah and Boise State stand a better chance against the SEC foe. How much more of this can we take as college football fans?
The choice is yours this weekend. If you are a fan of a college football playoff, then you need to see the Cowboys set bedlam loose this weekend by defeating Oklahoma. If you love your BCS then a Sooner victory allows for the perpetuation of the system with minimal damage.
Will "uproar and confusion" prevail late Saturday night in Stillwater, or will the BCS bring "clarity" to the outcome of college football?
It is blowing in like a tornado through an Oklahoma city.
In this week's podcast, find out what the College Football Guys think about the Sooners bringing a storm back to college football. Who should be the winner of the Big 12 South? Who will be in the BCS Championship? Is Utah deserving of a BCS Championship bid? Is there really only 3 SEC teams in the top 25? Find out who will win Bedlam in Stillwater. Who will bring home the prized Milk Can in Boise?
Oklahoma's destruction of Texas Tech on Saturday didn't help the College Football Guys figure out the best team in the Big-12 South, or the country, for that matter. However we did learn something this week and we feel that it is our duty to pass the knowledge on to you.
FSN's national broadcast of the Apple Cup, a battle of two teams with a combined 1-20 record, confirmed what your local news already knows - Americans LOVE train wrecks!
NBC knows this too! That's why they continue to renew their TV contract with Notre Dame. What is still unknown is which Notre Dame contract will last longer - Charlie's or NBC's?
Even though San Diego State fired head coach Chuck Long, his words from the beginning of the year may have served as prophesy. Wisconsin, playing at home, on Senior Day, needed a missed extra point attempt to beat Cal-Poly in OT, 36-35. This begs the question, "Is Cal-Poly better than Notre Dame?"
This weekend we figured out how the ACC should crown their champion.
1. Write the name of each program mathematically alive for an ACC division title on separate pieces of paper. 2. Fold them up and place them in a hat. 3. Have Doug Flutie draw a single piece of paper out. 4. The name of the program revealed will represent the ACC in a BCS game. No need for an ACC championship. It would muddy the water further and it doesn't make money anyway. 5. Then it is up to the chosen program to beg for mercy from the BCS bowl selection committee to be match against the Big East champ. This will be the ONLY way to prevent the ACC from losing another BCS game (1-9 since the BCS was created).
Not even the meteorologist in Mike Leach could predict the storm that hit the Red Raiders in Norman.
Did you know Joe Pa is getting hip replacement? Didn't know if you knew since it was only mentioned 412 times before, during, and after the Penn State/Michigan State game.
Minnesota showed us that the only way to close a stadium is the "Golden Gopher Way." After starting the season 7-1, Minnesota has dropped their last four games. Three of which were played in the Metrodome. A stadium that will no longer be the home of the mighty Golden Gophers as they move into their new digs on campus in '09. Iowa's 55-0 victory in Minneapolis, on Saturday was a COLD reminder of the team Gopher fans want to leave behind as fast as the empty Metrodome.
Andrew Aguila, kicker for the CMU Chippewas, is really Inigo Montoya. All six fingered men should be on high alert!
It is official, with a 2/OT loss to the Washington State Cougars, the Washington Huskies became the WORST 2008 team in NCAA Division I-A (FBS) football!
Speaking of NCAA worsts: Another week, another terrible uniform in college football. Vegas Gold? Can anyone tell us why?
Join The College Football Guys for this week's podcast as we ride out the calm before the storm.
Find out what TCFGs thought of this weekend's action. Who will win Texas Tech/Oklahoma? What will happen in Happy Valley? Does Boise State, Utah, and Ball State really have a shot to stay undefeated for another week? What is the most meaningless rivalry game scheduled for this "Rivalry Weekend?"
All this and soo much more in less than 30 minutes!
The state that brought us "change" in the White House, brings the country change to college football! A Big Ten team will not be in the BCS Championship game this year!
Celebrate good times!
Join The College Football Guys in this week's podcast as we discuss life without a Big Ten team. How good did Texas Tech look? They also talk about the playoff that the Big 12 schedule and SEC championship has given us. It is indeed a great time to be a fan of college football.
Don't forget, Stanford fans, this is the last weekend to receive a refund for those season tickets. That and SOO much more!
We here at the College Football Guys learned many things this weekend in college football. Chief among them was the odds of seeing ANOTHER Big Ten team in the BCS Championship game dropped to almost zero! The nation, including FOX executives, BCS Sponsors/Advertisers, and anyone who enjoys watching a competitive football game, rejoiced!!
This week we learned that Joe Pa can't figure out the BCS. We think he solved the puzzle on Saturday. It's real simple Joe, JUST WIN!
After John Parker Wilson scored Alabama's first touchdown Saturday, in "Death Valley," against LSU. He earned a "celebration penalty" for making the "Call me" motion with his hand. It appears that LSU idiots, er fans, once again found the cell phone number of an opposing SEC player, posted it on the Internet, and called repeatedly. That made us wonder what Tiger fans had to say to JPW, that was so important. The following are the ten most creative messages left by genius Tiger fans.
10. "Is Mike Hunt there?" 9. "Parker, Is your refrigerator running? Better go catch it." 8. "John Parker Wilson? More like Sara Jessica Parker." 7. "This is Nicolas Sarkozy, and I love that Sara Palin!" 6. "Do you have Fat Albert in a can?" 5. "You wouldn't happen to have a spare roll of toilet paper would you?" 4. "Hi. This is Jeni. You remember me from this weekend right? You don't?! (sniffle) Well I went to the doctor today (sob) and he ran a bunch of tests and said I am (bawl) pregnant, and it's (weep) yours." 3. (Deep breaths) "Luke I am your father! Luke!" 2. "Why do you keep calling me! You called me! What do you want!" 1. (After one bottle of bourbon) "John Parker Wilson, you ain't nuttin' but a bunch of Tiga' Bait! We goin' beat that Tide A** on Sata'day!"
Speaking of smart people from Louisiana, did anyone else find it interesting that Brett Helms (Center for LSU), was CBS' Scholar of the Game with a whopping 3.0 GPA? Seriously? There was no other player on either the Alabama or LSU sidelines with a higher GPA?
We still haven't learned why the SEC hates USC so much. This year the Trojans show all the classic signs of an SEC team - great defense. Minus the "Fluke in Corvallis," USC has allowed opposing offenses to score ONLY 33 points! The Trojan defense ranks 1st in the nation in Passing Defense, Total Defense and Scoring Defense, allowing less than a touchdown a game (6.67)! If that doesn't scream SEC football, we will never know what does.
We learned last week that beating Michigan, in "The Big House," was no longer enough to keep Toledo Tom's job. Now we wonder if beating Tennessee, in Neyland Stadium, is going to be enough to save Wyoming Coach Joe Glenn's job? Maybe his Cowboys' performance is just expected these days in Laramie, as Coach Glenn is 3-1 verse the mighty SEC in his tenure at Wyoming.
Will someone please inform Mountaineer fans that the game of football is 60 minutes long! With Cincinnati leading 20-7 and less than 4 minutes remaining in the game, WVU turned the ball over on downs inside the Cincinnati 10 yard line. Mountaineer fans hit the exits. They didn't get far. When the Mountaineers scored 13 points in the final 1:11 of the game fans began pouring back into the stands for overtime. Remember WVU fans, "It ain't over until, the fat lady sings!"
Whoever still believes that recruiting magazines and web sites don't embellish Notre Dame's prospects and national rankings to sell subscriptions to rabid Irish fans hasn't watched a game of college football lately.
We think Wake Forest's gold uni's should have stayed back in 1956, but we will let you decide.
This weekend is "The World's Largest Cocktail Party," which means it is time for "The World's Largest Dance Party - Part Deux." I bet CBS would have never guessed they were getting a piece of the Dancing with the Stars action.
We've got spirit, yes we do We've got spirit, how bout you? 1-2-3-4 we've got more than you can score 5-6-7-8 we've got more than you can take 9-10-11-12 we've got more than you can spell
Hey Hi Howdie, Dawgs get rowdy Hey Hi Ho, Dawgs lets go!!
The Gators are dynamite, Don't mess with dynamite Cause if you mess with dynamite it goes Tick, tick, tick, tick,
Boom Dynamite
Boom Boom Dynamite
In all seriousness, in the beauty contest that is the BCS Rankings, it might just come down to who has the best dancing skills. These Gators and Dawgs have a lot of work to do this weekend in order to impress the latest Harris Interactive Poll voters, Len Goodman, Carrie Ann Inaba, and Bruno Tonioli. (They will let ANYONE vote in that silly poll.)
Penn State and Texas already have very impressive resumes.
Has it really been over 400 days since Mike Gundy gave us a quality tirade?
Join The College Football Guys for our latest podcast! This week we discuss the outcome of two great games, Texas/Oklahoma State and Penn State/Ohio State. Who do we think will beat Alabama or Penn State this year? Can anyone make sense of the Big East or ACC? How bad did the SEC stub its toe this weekend?
Plus we preview of this weekend's biggest games. "The World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party" - Florida/Georgia and has Lubbock, TX EVER seen a bigger game than when Colt McCoy's Longhorns come to town on Saturday?
Check it out and see for yourself why The College Football Guys are becoming the most popular podcast on the web!
In this week's podcast The College Football Guys talk about Texas' big win over Missouri. We address our Heisman hopefuls. Is Washington State the worst team in college football history? How good is Alabama and Penn State? Who is really number one in the ACC?
A heated debate breaks out as we give our thoughts on the year's first BCS standings and how it compares to our own top 25.
We look ahead to next weeks games, including Okie State/Texas, Penn State/Ohio State, LSU/Georgia, Kansas/Texas Tech, USC/Arizona, Va Tech/Florida State and many more!
Plus the answer to the all important question, "What is 'The Battle for the Mitten?'"
According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary the word trap is defined as "something by which one is caught or stopped unawares."
Who will fall into a trap unawares this weekend?
According to everyone over at "The World Wide Leader" Ohio State will be "trapped" by Michigan State while looking ahead to Penn State next weekend. However everyone seems to be unaware of a potential trap being set for Penn State.
This weekend, the other team from Michigan, travels to white-washed Happy Valley looking for some semblance of respect after losing to a MAC team for the first time in its illustrious history. Now they go head to head with a team they are very comfortable facing as they have dominated the series against Joe Pa's Lions winning 10 of their 13 meetings, including the last NINE in a row!
Are the Lions of the Nittany variety overlooking Rodriguez's rolling wreck? Their fans sure hope not. Has the media's love affair with the "Spread HD" offense and continued praise of the team forced Penn State players to find larger pearly white helmets to fit over their enormous heads?
I guess on Saturday we will see if the Wolverines still have some pride left in them and can still set a successful trap.
Oh, by the way, if Ohio State loses this weekend it will be because Michigan State has a better team, not because they got trapped.
I know that we missed our weekly lesson on college football this Monday so we are going to make it up to you and provide a preview of this week's action. In honor of Ball State's 6-0 record and first stop into the AP top 25, we will give you our top 10 list of things that you will learn and see this weekend in college football.
10. Clemson will further muddy the ACC water's tonight by continuing the Thursday night upset theme and defeating Wake Forest on a last second field goal.
9. Who would have thought that this weekend's Arizona and Stanford game would be a match up of the ONLY remaining Pac Ten schools that still have healthy starting QB? Oregon has used four after losing their starter before the season even began. As of today it appears that ASU's Rudy Carpenter will miss his first start in 37 games.
8. Coach Tuberville picked a convenient week to fire his offensive coordinator. Arkansas has been outscored 139 to 31 in the last three games. By taking over the offensive play calling before this weekend's home game against the Razorbacks, Tommy will look like a play calling genius!
7. The scoring will be so fast and furious at the Missouri/Oklahoma State game that there will be no need to waste time lowering the nets behind the goal posts. Next week the NCAA will collect an extra sponsor check from Allstate for the additional advertising.
6. Oklahoma will trail for the first time this year.
5. This will be one more week that Big Ten referees don't have to worry about Joe Paterno running them down to give them an earful. At least the bathrooms are closer in the press box.
4. The only malfunction this weekend in UNC's Kenan Stadium will be the Jimmy Clausen and the Notre Dame offense. No more lighting fires in the PA system, light delays, falling concrete, broken elevators, or parachutists descending on the wrong stadium.
3. Tim Tebow has been praying this week for the safety of LSU defensive end Ricky Jean-Francois.
2. In a game that will ultimately cost Ty Willingham his job, Washington will struggle with their match up against BYE.
And the number one thing we will learn this weekend...
It is that time of year again! The time when one's favorite college football team should be overly careful avoiding a well laid trap.
What kind of trap you ask? The kind that jumps right out and kills you while you are looking ahead to next week's "bigger and better" opponent. You know like how the Emperor lured Luke's friends into a carefully thought out trap in Return of the Jedi.
Ever wonder how that sequence would have turned out if it was in other movies...?
As we saw last week when 19, 20, and 21 year olds are told they are the greatest thing since sliced bread they tend to believe it. Once they believe it the trap is half set, all that is missing is a road game verse an "inferior" opponent and a game the kids can't wait to play around the corner.
With these thoughts in mind here are some possible trap games to look for this weekend.
Penn State @ Purdue - First off we need to know if Joe Pa has even seen the Star Wars series. We believe that 1977 (the year Episode III came out) was the same year Paterno purchased the glasses he wears today. Anyway lets get to the game! After beating up on their first quality opponent of the year, Illinois, on national television, the spot light is back on in State College. This weekend they travel to a Big Ten team with a great quarterback and wounded pride from a loss to Notre Dame. With a match up at Wisconsin looming for the Lions they should be careful they don't overlook the Boilermakers early Saturday.
Texas @ Colorado - This is the first trip outside of the state of Texas for the Longhorns this year. Colt McCoy and the UT offense have been unstoppable so far this season. However with the Red River Shootout next weekend in Dallas, don't be surprised if the Buffs give Texas fits. Let us not forget what happened last year when Oklahoma visited Boulder the weekend before Red River.
Missouri @ Nebraska - Missouri is probably not looking ahead to Okie State next weekend, but don't be too surprised if they aren't thinking about playing in Austin on the 18th. Chase Daniel will find it hard to focus the next two weeks as he finally gets the chance to go home to Texas and show everyone what they have missed. Not only is this Missouri's first conference game, it is also their first true road game. The Tigers have lost 15 straight in Lincoln and need to make sure that streak stops this weekend, or else it is bye, bye title hopes!
We know it is a day late, but you will still love it! Our Week Six podcast is here! (Just click the link and press play.)
Join us as we discuss the making of an upset. Why is it that even when higher ranked teams see an upset Thursday night, on national TV, they STILL fall prey to being the victim?
What else happened this weekend that might have been overshadowed by all the upset talk? Plus each co-host unveils their top 10 for the first time this season.
If you have followed our podcast you know that we have been tracking the rivalry games played this year. This week is no exception, however when we noticed it was Miami/FSU week, we saw there is NO nickname for the storied matchup! After you listen and hear our thoughts on suggested nicknames for the big game help us choose which one you think is best suited. Don't like the ones we chose? You know what to do. Comment below for the world to see!
This weekend still got you rubbing your eyes? Maybe pinching yourself to see if this is all just a dream? Have you been left a confused mess on the couch crying out, "Why! Why!" Well to be frank we are still scratching our collective brains as well. However we did learn a couple of things this weekend.
Note to SEC fans. Writing off the Florida loss to an Ol' Miss team that hadn't won an SEC game on the road in the last 14 tries to "depth of conference" sounds as ridiculous as the following:
Oregon State's victory over USC definitely shows how strong the Pac Ten is.
Even though Maryland lost to Middle Tennessee State their victory over ACC power house Clemson demonstrates the depth and power of the ACC from top to bottom.
Michigan's 19 point comeback to upset #9 Wisconsin shows how much resolve and power the Big Ten conference has.
Houston's victory over BCS Cinderella ECU shows that top to bottom, it doesn't matter who you play in Conference USA, you better be careful!
Upsets in conference play happen SEC fans! Get over yourselves.
The practice of wearing black should be reserved ONLY for funerals. Here is the now famous You Tube footage. Advance to 1:05 so you don't waste your entire morning.
While it seems UGA was confused on the purpose of wearing black, Oregon State had an "orange out," Penn State had a "white out" and Miami called Stanford to find out some more information about their "Satisfaction Guarantee." With an attendance on only 35,830 in Dolphin Stadium it appeared they were doing a "walk out." Maybe Hurricane fans were just protesting Butch Davis' return.
Penn State offense looks much better in HD. It is amazing what the Lion's can do when Anthony Morelli isn't on the field to throw interceptions every other possession.
Even though visiting Pac Ten teams have to take a flight several hours long to Spokane, jump on a bus down a dirt road to Pullman, WA to stay the night at a Best Western in Moscow, ID, it doesn't seem to stop them from hanging 60+ on WAZZU, even on homecoming weekend.
While the spirit of David was alive and well in most college stadiums throughout the land, it seems the Palouse of Eastern Washington just might be a bit too remote for the littl' fella.
Time for some southern cookin' on The College Football Guys!
Listen to this week's podcast as we talk about SEC football. What is up with the Pac Ten this year? Who is this weekend's favorite to be a BCS Buster? A look ahead to Alabama/Georgia. Who's going to win this year's "Friends of Coal Bowl?" More importantly we play our most favorite game "Real or Silicon?"
As you probably already know by now, police found a small amount of the Magical Weed in a Penn State area apartment after responding to a noise complaint on Tuesday night. Though no charges have currently been filed, mysteriously one player has been kicked off the team and three other players have been suspended for this weekend's game vs. Oregon State.
Reminds us of a song we once thought was pretty funny. Be careful though if you play this one too loud you might have police at your front door responding to the noise complaint filed by your 75 year old neighbor.
I was going to write a clever blog, until I got high. I was going to bash all the Nittany Lions, but then I got high. This is the best I could do, and I know why!
Why?
Because I got High! Because I got High! Because I got High!
I was going to make fun of ESPN, before I got high. Was going to tell the world about overrated Joe Pa, but I got high! Now the world still thinks the man is a media genius, and I know why!
Why?
Because I got High! Because I got High! Because I got High!
I was going to make fun of Spurrier's Cocks, before I got high! Going to cheer on the mighty Commodores, but then I got high! There is no Smelley Cock joke on this blog, and I know why!
Why?
Because I got High! Because I got High! Because I got High!
I am going to stop writing this entry, because I'm high. I am destroying this whole damn blog, because I'm high! If I get suspended for a week, You'll know why!
Why?
Because I'm high! Because I'm high! Because I'm high...!
