Big 12 South: Best Division in College Football - Oops!

They had us fooled.

It seemed to true to be a lie.

How could high scoring offenses and great quarterback duels be wrong?

The Big 12 South HAD to be the best division in college football! Most of us thought the Big 12 North should be abandoned and Texas and OU should rematch for the Big 12 title.

You might be reading this and saying out loud, "But Texas won last night!"

You would be correct. The score in the paper this morning and on the University of Phoenix Stadium scoreboard clearly show UT the winner, however the game didn't. It took an early missed field goal and a last second touchdown for Texas to defeat an Ohio State team that has been destroyed in every big game it has played since the last time the Buckeyes played in Glendale.

Still claiming to be the best team in the land it is obvious that Longhorn players, coaches, and fans didn't get a chance to check out the other bowl games this year or even their own game. Texas' "#2 Rush Defense" allowed the Buckeyes to scamper for 203 yards.

The rest of the amazing Big 12 South has fared even worse this bowl season. Texas Tech and Oklahoma State ran into buzz saws from the number three team in the SEC and the second best team in the Pac Ten!

So just how good was the Big 12 South this year? Who really knows?

The top four teams in the division have defeated exactly TWO top twenty-five schools and both of those schools happen to be on OU's schedule, Cincinnati and TCU. A selection of the other powerhouse schools these "vaunted Big 12 programs" have defeated - Washington State, Washington, UTEP, UMASS, SMU, FAU, Eastern Washington, Chattanooga, and Houston.

Don't feel too bad. We have been fooled in college football before.

In fact it wasn't that long ago.

Think back with me if you will.

The year was 2006.

The day, November 18th.

The place Ohio Stadium, Columbus, OH.

Is it all starting to come back to you? Remember on that day when we thought Ohio State and Michigan were the #1 and #2 teams in the country? When we still thought the Big Ten was a great conference? Heck, Wisconsin was a top eight team! People were yelling for a Michigan/Ohio State BCS Championship rematch.

You remember now don't you? Do you remember what happened after that day? Of course you do! Wolverine and Buckeye fans paid me too much to repeat what happened in the weeks, months, and years that followed that fateful evening. However some of the mess had something to do with Urban Myer's Florida Gators.

Is the Big 12 South the best "conference" in college football? Doesn't look like it.

Maybe in the future we shouldn't be so quick to pass judgement and someone should warn the Sooners!

This is a post we did WAY back in March, but with today being the official start to college football, it is important to know where you stand on this issue before you even turn the tube on for the first game...

When it comes to the world of college football we all know that there is a huge divide between the North and South. It's as if "The War Between The States" never ended. Knowing this, it is important to discover where you stand on the Mason-Dixon Line. With this in mind we offer a simple test. I know it maybe old and you may have seen it before, but take it again! Who knows how much back-to-back SEC National Champs has affected your brain?

BTW - If you still think the Big Ten/Eleven is better than the SEC skip to the next blog entry, we already know your a funny wawlkin' and tawlkin' yank'.

Oh - There is no test for our "sick" friends from "So Cal, Bra!" Just take this one and see what happens.

The Media Circus is Here!

It is almost that time again! Time to suit it up and start practices across the country and work to get ready for Labor Day Weekend's opening games! But first coaches and players must suffer through media day.

On our podcast and on this blog we try to point out some interesting and humorous differences between the North, South and West and no where is this more evident than in how these regions treat their college football media day(s). The Big Ten and Beer

Cheese. Cows. Rust. Corn. Cars. Presidential Campaigns. Tires. Smash Mouth Football.

What do all these things have in common? They are the things that come to mind when we think of the Midwest. Oh and one more thing...cold winters and lots of beer.

The no-nonsense, smash mouth mentality of the blue color Midwest (or west if you ask the "Champions of the West") is reflected in its football and the way one wets his whistle. Without further a due here is a helping hand on recognizing the correlation between Big Ten teams and beverage they love so much, beer.

Ohio State - Bud Light. Mass produced, standard bearer which all compare themselves too. Not for the mature pallet. Those outside of region think that the product is watered down.

Michigan - Miller Lite. Claims to be better tasting with less calories and more sophistication (its "L-I-T-E" beer) than its rival, yet still gets beaten up by the standard bearer.

Wisconsin - Heileman's Old Style. An unassuming brew that just wants to run the ball, have a quick game and get back to State Street to party some more.

Michigan State - Coors Light. Dreams of being Michigan and Ohio State. No matter how much money they throw at it, or how many leagues they are the official sponsor of, they still can't get there.

Penn State - Rolling Rock. Hugely popular on the east coast. No one really knows why, nor does anyone outside the Poconos understand the significance of "33" or a "nittany." Pale in color and prefers plain uni's and large fraternity parties.

Iowa - Natural Light. Thinks its as good as the "big boys." This thinking is evident in the way it pays its head coach. Good cheap beer, and with the right keg cap can be pawned off as Bud Light.

Northwestern - Elsinore Beer. One program might want to give their "cat" a beer or two. May produce some victories... Funny movie, funny program. Neither care about football.



Illinois - Miller High Life. The Champaign of Beers. Alright that was a horrible pun, but this is the program that brought the Champagne of QB's into the NFL. Where is Jeff George now? I hear the Raiders still have a need.

Indiana - Guinness. A popular dry stout that gets you through the cold, dark, dirty, basketball season. Oh this is a football article? Who cares! Definitely no one in Bloomington.

Minnesota - An Empty Beer Mug Full of Tears. Why did Lou Holtz leave us! Boho..wah! MOMMY! MAKE HIM COME BACK!!

Purdue - Cask Ale. Much like a Boilermaker any one born after 1900 has NO idea what the heck you are talking about! A brew that requires a trained craftsman as well as much thought and engineering. Making a small comeback to the national scene.

"Ziggie, Zaggie, Ziggie, Zaggie, Oy, Oy, Oy!!!"

Big-Ten Revenge...

This week it was announced that the Big Ten will have an excellent opportunity to defend itself versus its SEC critics. The only problem is it won't happen for another 10 YEARS! On Thursday it was announced that The Ohio State University and The University of Tennessee have reached an agreement to play a home-and-home series starting in...

...wait for it...

...2018!

I guess the Luckeyes couldn't get Youngstown State off the schedule until 10 years from now and Middle Tennessee State wouldn't back down on its 10 year commitment to be Smokey's lap dog (er dragon).

Well we can always look on the bright side. By the time they play each other it will be a battle of the ages pitting Heath Shuler's boy vs. Mo Clarett's 2nd son! Whoever wins this match should be an early front runner for the Heisman and NFL draft bust stardom!

May the next ten years go as fast as the last! Oh the good old days of 1998, when Nebraska and Florida State mattered and USC and OU prayed to become bowl eligible.

Come on college football! Give the public what they want and give it to us sooner!

Blue in the Face!

Here is Kevin Borseth, women's basketball coach of the Michigan Wolverines. Maybe he should have been considered for the UM football coaching position, or maybe he should have gave the pregame speech before App. State. Forget about Russell Crowe! Do you think Lloyd Carr would still have his job?
