Pro Playoff Ads By Playoff PAC

In case you happen to live outside the TV markets of Boise, Dallas/Ft. Worth, and Salt Lake City, here is the ad you will miss this week while watching your BCS games.

Playoff PAC is a political action committee that is working to raise awareness and gain support for congressional legislation to force out the BCS and institute a college football playoff. During this week's BCS games the group will air the above ad in the Boise, DFW, and Salt Lake City markets to further enrage "non-qualifier" fans and supports. Mud slinging seems to work for elections, lets all pray it works for a playoff.

For listeners of this site's podcast, we aired this excerpt of the "Dan Patrick Show" for the "final score" of our Week 14 Podcast. Click here if you would like to hear Dan Patrick's entire interview with BCS Executive Director Bill Hancock. Make sure you have a vomit bag handy.

For more information about the work of Playoff PAC you can visit their website at www.playoffpac.com.

Why Not USC?

Its that time of year again! Time to start stumping for your favorite team to make it into the BCS Championship.

This year it seems the decision has already been made. The reservations booked. The BCS will select Oklahoma (provided they take care of the Tigers this weekend in cold KC) to play the winner of the SEC Championship Game to play in their title game.

Is this the correct decision?

Last we checked there are three other one loss BCS programs that have been left out of the equation here.

Texas and coach Mack Brown have used every media outlet they could find to plead their case to the nation and the voters. Big Mack has been on every sports show on the "World Wide Leader." A banner, provided by Texas boosters, was flown around the campus of Oklahoma State on Saturday. Texas has done everything short of interviewing with "60 Minutes" and making a guest appearance on "The View." (It is rumored that Elizabeth Hasselbeck has a HUGE crush on Colt McCoy.)

While we recognize that we do not possibly carry the same influence, it is time that someone attempts to make a case for USC.

Today we will look at why the University of Southern California (every time I read that I break into a Keith Jackson voice) deserves a shot at the BCS Championship Game.

The Trojans are a team built to make any SEC fan proud. Their defense first mentality this season has made them THE defense in college football. The Trojans defense has first round NFL talent in nearly every position and might just shut out Daunte Culpepper and the mighty Detroit Lions.

The Trojans rank number one in every major statistical defensive category. They have allowed only 10 touchdowns all season! Seven of which were scored in 2 games. USC has held nine opponents to 10 points or less including three shut outs. They are giving up a mere 3.4 yards a play.

The Men of Troy traveled over 2200 miles to hand Virginia a 52-7 home opening whoopin'. The Trojan's turned around and dominated, now 10-2 Ohio State, 35-3. A Buckeye program that returned 19 starters from a team that played in the 2008 BCS Championship Game. USC's annual rivalry game against Notre Dame resulted in a complete embarrassment for a once proud Irish program. USC held ND without a first down until the final play of the third quarter.

USC's collection of non conference victories is more impressive than Alabama's Clemson, Tulane, Arkansas State, and Western Kentucky. SEC fans will scream, "The Tide defeated Arkansas, Georgia, Tennessee, and LSU all on the road!" How great was that home advantage this year? Lets not forget that Wyoming and Georgia Tech took care of business in Knoxville and Athens and it took LSU the largest comeback in school history to overcome Troy in Baton Rouge. Remember, the mighty SEC is only 6-10 against BCS programs this year.

Finally lets look at everyone's favorite barometer when judging the beauty pageant that is college football, "Who did you lose to?"

Everyone knows this answer. We even warned of it! USC lost at Oregon State 27-21. A game where the Trojans were listless and outplayed in the first half, taking a 21-0 deficit to the locker room. They outscored the Beavers 21-6 in the second half but it wasn't enough. Oregon State used this victory as a spring board to their season as they came one game shy of reaching the Rose Bowl and a Pac Ten Championship. Are college football teams allowed to have bad days?

Absolutely!

Ask Florida if they played their best, at home, against Ol' Miss this year. Their complete third quarter meltdown led to a Rebel victory, yet the Gators still play on.

USC did what it could to make it to the BCS Championship Game. If not for a first half meltdown in Corvalis, USC would be smelling more than roses this year.

Mr. President Elect, "Get a Life!"

That does it!

You have been warned!

Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez tells all of us to "Get a Life!" In his weekly press conference this week, R-Rod suggested the following, "It's amazing some of the things that people would say [on a message board] or yell at you of a personal nature. You almost want to tell them, 'Get a life.'"

He went on to suggest that there are a lot more important things out there to talk about, like the economy. That might be so, but it seems that even the president-to-be finds time to talk a little college football. Perhaps he should "Get a Life."

Watch CBS Videos Online

Those wishing for a college football playoff better hope he doesn't. Without Obama "throwing his weight around," change in the way college football ends its season isn't going to happen anytime soon.

How is that you ask?

In case you haven't noticed, ESPN just acquired rights to the BCS bowl games through 2014. The BCS has money through 2014 and we can go ahead and stop talking about this playoff thing actually happening before 2014.

What we can talk about now is if ESPN "management" will muffle any of its commentators who actually want a playoff... Only time will tell.

Trophies for EVERYONE!

As predicted in an earlier post the BCS commissioners got together this week and said NO to a college football playoff, but YES to two more exciting bowl games! Now 68 teams will be able to participate in bowl games this year!

Lets do some math here. There are 119 NCAA teams. 68 divided by 119...Carry the one...Add the two...57% of college football teams are going to bowl games next year! Remember when you played little league and at the end of the season EVERYONE got a participation trophy? Congrats NCAA you are getting really close to copying this format!

I was just thinking the other day about how unfair it was that Louisville (6-6), Iowa (6-6), Northwestern (6-6), Louisiana-Monroe(6-6), and Ohio (6-6) didn't make a bowl game last year. Guess what folks they will be in this year! Fantastic!

Also announced is that the NCAA had an attendance of 1.6 million people and made $222 million last bowl season. The NCAA's current TV contract a 6 year $320 million deal with FOX expires at the end of 2009. That pales in comparison to the 11 year $6 billion deal that it has with CBS for "March Madness." How interesting...

All in all, Navy really got the short end of the stick. If the Midshipmen become bowl eligible they now trade San Diego and the San Diego Credit Union/Visitors Bureau/Sea World Poinsettia Bowl for, winter in DC, playing in a BASEBALL stadium! HORRIBLE!

Status Quo

This is one of the most positive articles about a playoff system that has been published in a while. However it doesn't look like ANYTHING will change when the BCS conference commissioners are done meeting Wednesday afternoon in Hollywood, FL. It seems that the Big Ten and Pac Ten commissioners are still "party poopers" about the whole idea of a playoff and nothing can change until the Pac-10, Big Ten, and Rose Bowl contract with ABC ends in 2014! 2014? Yes, 2014! Well at least we will have some great bowls to watch!

The idea of playoffs is going NOWHERE fast!

Congress' Turn, Maybe?

Well now that congress has squeezed all the good will votes out of the baseball steroid scandal, they have found another sport to stick their noses in, college football. Congressional Representatives from Georgia, Hawaii, and Idaho are introducing legislation to congress that would require the Justice Department to investigate whether or not the BCS system violates federal antitrust law.

As the article points out, it is very interesting that all three of the representatives are from states that include schools passed over for national championship consideration in the last two years. If the presidents and the BCS won't change anything maybe congress can.

If only Jose Canseco had written a book about the BCS system, instead of steriods, we might already have a 16 team playoff. One can only dream...

No Playoffs. More Bowls. Ho Hum.

Ben Franklin once said "The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results." It seems that the presidents of our major universities have never heard this quote. This year is no different. An inspired Michael Adams, President of the University of Georgia, pushed at the end of the college football season for a college playoff system, yet according to a USA Today article today it appears it won't even be discussed at the upcoming presidents' meetings. Not an eight team playoff. Not 4. Not even a plus one will be brought up! It will all be tabled to a later date.

One thing that will be considered is more bowl games! Isn't that exciting? This is just what I was thinking we needed at the end of last year. There were 7, bowl eligible, teams last year that didn't get to go to a bowl game. This is an injustice that needs to be addressed! These teams worked too hard to win their 4 non conference cupcakes only to be rewarded with going back home to Grandma and Auntie M for the holidays instead of such exotic locals as Salt Lake City, St. Petersburg, and DC. (Two of the purposed bowls would be played in baseball stadiums. Hasn't the Emerald Nuts Bowl taught us anything? Your right, your right, no one watches that game).

If we are going to increase the bowl games lets at least bring back some of these bowl classics.

Salad Bowl - Phoenix, AZ (1948-52)
Pineapple Bowl - Honolulu, HI (1940-52)
Glass Bowl - Toledo, OH (1946-49)
Sunflower Bowl - Winfield, KS (1982-86)
Dixie Bowl - Birmingham, AL (1948-49)
Boot City Bowl - Dodge City, KS (1970-80)
Gotham Bowl - New York, NY (1960-61)
Refrigerator Bowl - Evansville, IN (1948-56)
Cigar Bowl - Tampa, FL (1947-56)
Poi Bowl - Honolulu, HI (1936-39)
Bluebonnet Bowl - Houston, TX (1959-87)
Bacardi Bowl - Havana, Cuba (1937)
Raisin Bowl - Fresno, CA (1946-49)

Yes these are all real. We couldn't make up better it we tried. (Alright maybe after a couple...er four glasses of Makers and water). Here are many more if you want to check them out!

This college football guy is all for capitalism and the right of anyone to make an honest buck, but it seems that adding more bowls and squelching all talk of a playoff is not the way to maximize profits. University presidents might want to take head in something else the great Franklin said "A man wrapped up in himself makes a very small bundle."

Curse of The University of Phoenix Stadium?

Maybe it is the fact that the Stadium is named after a school that has no athletic team and no real campus? Maybe it's because the stadium has the word Phoenix in its title yet is located in Glendale, AZ? Maybe it's the true meaning of the word Phoenix, a bird rising from the ashes, creating something from nothing? Maybe it is a carry over from the curse on the Arizona Cardinals from the Pottsville Maroons? Whatever it is, something fishy is happening in The University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale! Since the arena opened its doors in 2006, the heavy underdogs have won EVERY single major sporting event under its roof. Here is a list:

2007 Fiesta Bowl - Boise State 43-42 over OU
2007 BCS Championship - Florida 41-14 over Ohio State
2008 Fiesta Bowl - WVU 48-28 over OU

Super Bowl XLII - NY Giants 17-14 over the 18-0 Pats

What did we learn boys and girls? When it comes to big games in the beautiful "Bell Cactus of the Desert" take the dogs and the points, heck who needs the points? Sit back and watch a great upset!
