Most Overrated Games in 2008

Every preseason, college football fans across the country take a look at their helmet schedules and start circling games that they think will be the best of the season. Once these games get circled we find that some simply don't pan out to be as good as what we all expected. When you go to circle your "must watch games" this year, make sure that you avoid these games. We promise there will something better on another channel.

Tennessee @ UCLA - This game is getting much hype simply because it is the first of two games pitting the "east-coast biased whining," Pac Ten fans against the "we're better than anyone because we care more," SEC fans. Much like last year's Tenn/Cal game it really told us nothing about either team. Tennessee got beat by Cal in a "hostile" environment that included about a 1/3 Vol fans and marked Cal's only sellout crowd. UT went on to come a couple plays short of being SEC champs and Cal crashed towards a 6-6 record. Let's hope those 35,000+ Tennessee/SEC fans enjoy their experience in the Rose Bowl.

USC @ UCLA - Another game that is being over hyped purely for the "Neuheisel" affect. UCLA couldn't make anything happen last year with 20 returning starters and without a QB for the first month of the season they are in for another disappointing year. By the time Dec. 6th rolls around, if USC has more than one loss, no one outside of California will care. America's attention will be focused solely on the Big 12 and SEC Championship Games that will largely dictate who will be playing in the BCS Championship.

USF @ WVU - This game sets itself up nicely as what looks to be the "unofficial" Big East championship game on Dec. 6th, however by the time it rolls around it will NOT decide the Big East title. Does anyone remember what was said about the Louisville @ WVU game at the beginning of 2007? That game became insignificant when Louisville found themselves 5-4 coming into Morgantown. This year roles reverse as WVU finds out the hard way it is a little harder to win without Rich Rod on the sidelines. A talent loaded USF team becomes the best of the Big East this year and beats the Mountaineers for the third consecutive year on its way to a BCS birth.

Alabama @ LSU - While EVERYONE in Baton Rouge is talking about the return of "Satan" to Death Valley this game will not live up to the typical SEC soap opera off the field. LSU is missing a proven QB and by Nov. 8th Alabama just won't be in the SEC West race. What could make this interesting is if some how, some way, Saban mysteriously disappears somewhere between the hotel and the field... When are Bayou Bengal fans going to start making Saban Voodoo Dolls?

Michigan @ Ohio State - I know, I know. I hear the screams from Ann Arbor and Columbus as we speak! This match up is argued by most to be THE rivalry in college football, however this Nov. 22nd it will simply be a great rivalry and have little significance on the national scene. By the forth Saturday in Nov. Michigan will simply be struggling to get bowl eligible. Ohio State will roll and finish its season on top, ready to wait the 2+ months to play in its third consecutive BCS Championship game.

Baked Coaches?

Pineapple Express hit the big screen yesterday and the wheels started turning in the minds of The College Football Guys thinking about what coaches out there might be coaching "under the influence." The coaches below show a few of the tell tale effects Maryjane has on a body.

June Jones, SMU. Talks at a single octave and at about 2 words/minute. Drug Effects - Clouded judgement, swore up and down that Colt was not a system QB and that Hawaii had a chance against Georgia. Road the "Pineapple Express" all the way to Dallas.

Ty Willingham Washington His monotone voice and serious demeanour might be mistaken for being stoned out of your mind. Drug Effects - He is EXTREMELY paranoid about reporters as he requires closed practices with high security. When listening to his press conferences you are not sure whether to laugh of be scared.

Jim Tressel, Ohio State. His Value Village style sweeter vests remind us of Donald Sutherland's character, Prof. Dave Jennings in Animal House. Drug Effects - Looks especially dazed when facing an SEC team (WILL THAT JOKE EVER END?)

Dave Wannstedt, Pitt. Drug Effects - His constant bed head and sloppy dress make it look like he is recovering from a three day binge.

Jeff Tedford, California. Obvious choice since daily he gets a contact high from the hippies outside his office. Drug Effect - players seem to lack the motivation to get to the next level.

Dan Hawkins, Colorado. Another case of suspected contact high in Boulder. Drug Effects - Can't wait to RV through the state and "meet" with fans. "Say, brotha, you got a joint? It'd be a lot cooler if you did!"

Jim Leavitt, USF. Closest college football has to its own Spicoli. Drug Effects - Hallucination causing the coach to think he is actually playing in the game, preparing by running wind sprints in pregame.

"All I need are some tasty waves, a cool buzz, and I'm fine."

Ralph Friedgen, Maryland and Mark Mangino, Kansas. What stoner/coach bit would be complete without including any mention of the munchies. Drug Effect - It is obvious these coaches have had the munchies once or twice in there lives.

Big East and Our Favorite Shows

Since the Hurricanes, Hokies, and Eagles left the Big East for the "greener pastures" of the ACC the Big East has been fighting for respect and recognition. The College Football Guys are here to help. We have made it easy for you to get to know the Big East by pairing them with famous TV shows that we have all come to enjoy.

WVU - "Survivor." The first relevant show in the Big East. Recent drama and changes in format reek of desperation, which continues to make it fun to watch, but for how much longer? Will Bill Stewart and the program "survive" without Rodriguez? Might be destined for syndication in the near future.

Rutgers - "Biggest Loser." Was once a loser with low self esteem. Now healthy, hip and ready to be a winner the rest of their lives. We will see if they can keep their head "trainer" as ratings suffer without.

UConn - "Big Brother." Has origins in another league (England/Division I-AA). Desire to be an elite program. Voyeur nature makes it a guilty pleasure. Unfortunately the program serves as filler until the real season begins (basketball & fall viewing).

USF - "American Idol." New. Sexy. Every one's favorite. It is unbelievable how far this program has gone in such a short time. Randy Jackson could pull off the "Mohawk" but I can't see Paula in one. However, we would like to see Simon Cowell challenge Coach Leavitt.

Pitt - "Deadliest Catch." Blue collar; salt of the earth program. They hope that their "catch" against WVU wasn't a fluke. Will interest and captivate viewers if they can pull in enough wins to compete for the Big East title.

Syracuse - "Who Want’s to be a Millionaire?" Has done well with good hosts - Jim Brown/Donovan McNabb/Regis. Without, they are stuck in syndication on the 4 o'clock hour making them relevant only to old alumni in Florida. "Ready for the early bird special Earl?"

Cincy - “Dancing with the Stars.” Show exploded on the scene last year with big wins thanks to nifty moves and great QB play. Can they make it a tradition moving forward or will their game be canceled?

Louisville - "Real World." Always a juicy story whether it’s Petrino or new head coach Kragthorpe. Alumni continue to fight and bicker about what might have been! Makes you wish Puck would come back to your TV.

DRAMA!!

"Take Me Back in Time!"

Press play below and continue reading...

The 2008 college football preview magazines are starting to hit shelves at a store near you! Of coarse this college football guy had to be the first person in town to buy Lindy's College Football 2008 Preview. While thumbing through the glorious, full color, glossy pages and reading the predictions of the upcoming season it made me think, just how accurate are these magazines?

It occurred to me that there was just one way to find out. So I slipped on my red and white Nike's, threw on my jean jacket, cranked up Huey Lewis & The News, hopped into the stainless steel Dalorean, put the pedal to the metal until that speedometer reached 88 miles an hour and went back in time to May 2007. There I found a copy of Lindy's 2007 Preview and want to share these actual, 2007, predictions with you. (I couldn't make this up if I tried.)

Lindy's Rose Bowl Pick - Cal vs. Michigan

Ohio State at Michigan - If Wolverines don't win, it's gonna feel like Chad Henne, Mike Hart and Jake Long came back for 'nuthin.

We wish...that Navy, doing so well under coach Paul Johnson, could finally end a 43-game losing streak to Notre Dame that dates to the Roger Staubach era.

Why is the ACC ranked No. 2 (best conference)? What the league has is amazing depth that rivals or surpasses the SEC.

Kansas - Sophomore QB Todd Reesing will continue to compete for the starting spot, but likely will be a backup.

Oregon at Michigan - Trying to slow down RB Jonathan Stewart will prepare UM for Big Ten.

Oklahoma at Colorado - Couldn't CU officials have picked an easier homecoming foe?

Michigan brought in a solid class that included star playmaker Ryan Mallett at quarterback.

Ohio State at Washington - Huskies' schedule still reads like the school is a powerhouse.

And the favorite to win the 2007 Big 12 Conference championship is....Nebraska? That far-fetched prediction is brought to you by the Committee to Save the Big 12 North.

Notre Dame at UCLA - Bruins might want to shelve the prevent defense this time around.

Louisville - The defense should be fine, but if the Cardinals have to win in a shootout, so be it. Just like last season, Louisville should be in the hunt for the national title.

Stanford at USC - Only big in seeing how much Carroll runs it up on Harbaugh.

South Florida at Auburn - QB Matt Grothe and Bulls will be thinking upset.

Appalachian State - Dare we say "dynasty?" ASU reloads to take a shot at FCS' first three-peat.

BTW - If some dimwitted slime ball starts winning a lot in Vegas and turns Hill Valley into a gang infested slum it means Biff stole my 2008 preview while I was back in 2007.

What a difference a year makes!

Back to Class for Coaches

Penn State is starting a class this fall that examines how Joe Paterno handles the media. That gave The College Football Guys an idea. What other coaches could we study to learn valuable skills for the future, or at least get an easy A.

Here are some other class titles, inspired by college coaches, that might be successful on a campus near you.

George O'Leary, UCF - English 195 "Resume Building." Class discontinued, like this joke should be.

History 321 "Mr. Rogers affect on Popular Culture/Dress." - Jim Tressel, Ohio State

Pete Carroll, USC - Sales 401 "How to Win Games and Influence Recruits...with Money."

Physiology 350 "The Inter-workings of a Smile." - Ty Willingham, Washington

Rich Rodriguez. Michigan - Admin 150 "From Shredders to Scissors, the Ins and Outs of Office Machinery." Community college favorite.

Physical Education 110 "Yoga - The Key to Peace and Calmness to your Life" - Jim Leavitt, USF

Mike Gundy, Oklahoma State - English 205 "Intro to Newspaper Journalism"

Pat Hill, Fresno State in collaboration with Oregon's Mike Bellotti - Cosmetology 102 "The Art of a Mustache."

Lou Holtz - Managment 315 "Finding the Positive in the Worst Employees" The kids are calling it 'Talks for Jocks'. An example is given below.

Go Notre Dame! Beat Duke!
